2018-19 Race Videos

Here are a collection of links to the broadcast videos from the Nordic World Cup and the World Championships (Posts for previous seasons can be found under the Video Main Menu).   The races where we have not found the broadcast are shown in italics.  Where possible we have linked to the version with the English language commentary, but there are a few with Norwegian or Russian. Note the World Cup race dates are in Day/Month format below.  Where two races are on one line the Ladies is first followed by the Men.  When a race has a C after the distance it is in classic technique and when followed by an F it is freestyle.

Pre Season Meeting

All Athletes (and parents) interested in being part of the NU Nordic Ski Team for the 2019-20 Winter Season should plan on attending the meeting in the Science Lecture Hall at 6 pm on Tuesday October 15. Please contact Coach Amy Van Voorst Giles if you have any questions. Please spread the word to anyone who may be interested.

Website Scheduled Down Time

Starting around midnight September 30, 2019 the nu-nordic.org website will be off the internet for a few days. We are physically relocating the server. Everything should be up and running well before the ski season gets under way.

Team Photo

The team photo will be taken on Wednesday Dec 5, 2018 at 4:40 pm.   Remember to bring your race uniform to school.   Because of this conflict we will be going to on-snow on Thursday Dec 6, 2018 instead.   Note the year!

Updated Team Schedule

Now we are on snow after school practices have changed to keep the total hours roughly the same.

Monday (collab):  2:45 – 5:15 pm.   We are in strength/condition room 4:30 – 5:15 pm

Monday (non-collab) 3:45 – 6:00 pm.  We are in strength/condition room 4:30 – 5:15 pm

Tuesday:  NO PRACTICE

Wednesday:  On-Snow leave school 3:45 and return by 8:30.  Doodle sign-up required.   If weather or roads make on snow impossible we do dry-land till 6:00 pm.

Thursday: Dryland 3:45 – 6:00 pm.  We are in strength/condition room 5:15 – 6:00 pm

Usually an optional on-snow on Sunday morning.   Check Doodle for special on-snow trips.

On-Snow Practices

Snow

First on-snow practice is planned for Sunday December 2.   Please sign up on Doodle  if you plan to attend.   The tentative schedule through the end of term has been posted on Doodle.   We cancelled the original Friday evening on-snow because of forecast winds.   Until we get our new skiers comfortable enough to leave the stadium area it is not pleasant to practice in high winds.   The stadium area is the only part of the trail system that is lighted so a certain level of skiing ability is needed to train with just a headlamp.

An important reminder –  If you do not sign up you will probably not get a seat in a car,  If you do sign up but do not show up you will be placed in the lowest priority for future seats.  We try and find drivers to get the whole team to practice and if we ask a driver to drive and they are not needed we all get angry.

Team Calendar

As well as the off-campus events shown in Doodle there is also a general team calendar in Google.  You can find it on the team web-site or you can link it (read-only) to your own personal calendar.   It is generally updated as plans change, but may not show sudden changes caused by weather etc.   At present it does not show our on-snow schedule over the Christmas break.   We will try and choose 3-4 days over the break that suit the largest number of athletes.

Switch to On-Snow Practice Schedule

The storms this week have opened up on-snow training.   Once we switch to after school on-snow practices which do not return to NU until 8:30 pm we make Monday or Tuesday dry land practice optional.  You are welcome to come to both Monday and Tuesday but only one is required for attendance purposes.   As Monday is normally a collaboration day we get to practice in daylight till 5:00 pm.  Tuesday will remain one of our days in the Strength/Fitness gym from 5:15-6:00.  Monday will be focused on a distance roller ski workout over at Via Vista.   However, just because the practice is no longer mandatory does not mean we do not need to know whether you will be attending.   Please email or text Derek or Amy by the end of lunch if you are not attending a dry land practice.  It is impossible to plan a practice unless we know who will be there.

Practice Starts Monday Oct 29

First Practice
Our first practice is on Monday October 29 in Room B-3 starting at 2:45 sharp.  Be ready to work out and bring a helmet (and gloves) for roller skiing.   If you are still involved in a Fall sport please send an email so we know to expect you or make sure you select Nordic as your Winter Sport so we can add you to our roster.
Until the snow arrives the practice schedule is Mon-Thu after school  for 2hours 30 minutes.  So we finish at 5:00 pm on Collab Days and 6:00 pm other days.   On Tuesday and Thursday we are in the Strength and Fitness from 5:15 – 6:00 pm.  Otherwise we practice outside.  After Daylight Savings stops we will be in B-3 after dark on Wednesday.
Sports Clearance
We still have a lot of athletes who have not appeared in our roster.  The FamilyID database shows us who have completed the sports clearance procedure AND have selected Nordic Skiing as their winter sport.   We cannot let you practice with the team until both these steps are complete.  If you have not yet completed your physical, still do the rest of the registration on FamilyID so we know who is in the pipeline.  We will see that you are not approved yet but it helps a lot.
If you are cleared for a Fall sport please get your parents to log into FamilyID and select Nordic as your winter sport.   If you plan to ski and have not yet completed your physical you need to deal with this promptly.
Parent Meeting Slides
For those that did not manage to attend the parent meeting on Tuesday Oct 16,  I have posted a PDF of the slides that were presented.   The video slides are just shown as a snapshot but the rest of the slides are complete.   Remember that this presentation was aimed at both parents and athletes and sometimes a particular slide is aimed at one or the other.  It may have been clearer in person who the intended audience was!
Recruiting
If you have friends who you think may enjoy Nordic Skiing, please get them to contact me.   It helps tremendously to have beginners at the start of the season rather than later.    The weather is great now but the snow will come.   When the snow arrives things get a lot more hectic and do not have as much time to deal with new people arriving.
Beginner Roller Skiing
For those that are cleared for sport there are Beginner Roller Skiing Clinics scheduled.  Need a minimum of 2 athletes signed up for a session to take place.   Email me if you have any questions.   If there are other better times over the October Break for some sessions let me know.  With enough notice I am flexible.
